Shelties Remembered

PJ came into our rescue about 8½ years ago. He spent some time with Dr. Lynch and then briefly in a foster home before Marilyn went to meet him — and it truly was love at first sight. From that moment on, PJ became her devoted companion. Under Marilyn’s gentle, unwavering care, he lived a beautiful, full life and reached the remarkable age of 16.

He passed peacefully in Marilyn’s arms, surrounded by the love that had carried him all those years.

Chip came into rescue in 2017 as a six-month-old puppy and died suddenly at the age of nine. John and Christine are heartbroken not only by his passing, but by how unexpected it was. Chip was a happy, handsome Blue Merle, and LISSR will miss seeing him at our events.

James entered Sheltie Rescue at the age of eleven. Having spent his early years living in an apartment with an older couple, he found himself in need of a new home and family.

Susan and John welcomed James with open arms, offering him love and care. Over the course of three wonderful years, James became a cherished member of their family, experiencing warmth and affection every day. 

Maddie joined Jan and Joe’s family in 2017 at three and a half years old, having been welcomed into rescue. She quickly became an integral part of their lives, experiencing many joyful adventures. Maddie loved spending summers camping at the beach and visiting the family’s lake house, where she enjoyed playing with her siblings. Maddie’s warm spirit and playful nature touched everyone who knew her.

Please keep Al and Karen in your thoughts, they recently helped their sweet boy Beau cross the bridge. Beau came into rescue as an abused and terrified sheltie. LISSR extends their gratitude for their love and patience to help Beau become the best he could be. He had been so abused that it took years to even begin to correct the damage he had withstood. With time and a lot of patience he slowly became a dog – just on his terms.

We were so thankful that LISSR trusted us with such a sweet girl. Lexi was our great love for 10 years. She loved to travel – she climbed mountains in Maine, walked the beaches on the Outer Banks and spent countless hours riding along as we ran errands. She never wanted to be left behind. She leaves a huge hole in so many hearts.

Benny came into rescue as a 14‑month‑old Owner Turn-In, and from the moment he arrived it was clear he was meant to find his way to the Bedell family. They were the perfect match for him, and they considered it an honor to care for him throughout his life.

Benny was the best little buddy to cuddle with, and he filled their home with love, warmth, and joy. 

Cody was rescued in April 2014 as an active 2-year-old and enjoyed a wonderful life with his adopted family. He spent summers at Smith’s Point and cherished time at a cabin upstate. Always on the go like his family, Cody loved every moment of it. He bravely battled cancer and passed away in his dad’s arms.

Lilly was just a week shy of her 14th birthday. She was rescued from a terrible environment, then spooked and was on the run for a month before being reunited with Jackie. Lilly liked laying in the sunshine and taking long naps.

Tara, whom was adopted in 2019, brought so much joy to her new family and as Mom lovingly says, she was a true pleasure to have as part of their family.

Leslie adopted Ziggy as a one-year-old puppy, and he lived to be 12-1/2 years old. She lovingly describes him as her sweet and gentle boy. Rest in peace, dear Ziggy

George joined our rescue in 2019 along with 10 other shelties. When his photo was shared, Bridget and Anthony instantly fell in love with him. George was a kind and gentle soul who adored being petted. Thank you, Bridget and Anthony, for giving George a life filled with love and joy.

Diane and MacDuff shared four remarkable years together, filled with numerous adventures. MacDuff had a way of enchanting everyone who crossed his path. He was definitely a charmer.

Oliver, affectionately known as “Mr. Handsome,”  was rescued as a young pup and lived an extraordinary 17-1/2 years. He lived life to the fullest and will be missed by all that knew him. RIP Mr. Handsome.

Cooper was rescued in 2017 as a one-year-old puppy and brought immense joy to his new family. He had many adventurers. 

Heidi lived to the remarkable age of 16.5 years and was the cornerstone of Amy and Craig’s family. Over the years, Amy and Craig have fostered numerous shelties, and Heidi always welcomed them with warmth and reassured them they were safe. She possessed a truly special gift.

Ellie entered rescue at the age of five in December of 2014, with a severe open wound on her back that required daily care. To our surprise, it was discovered that she was pregnant. She gave birth to three beautiful male puppies, Nicky, Dasher, and Comet, in keeping with the Christmas theme. Despite her life being turned upside down, Ellie proved to be an exceptional mother. She went on to live a joyful and fulfilling life, reaching the remarkable age of 16.

Another loved Sheltie has gained her Angel wings. Debbie and Bill lost their beautiful Sheltie Jessie. Jessie came into Rescue as a frightened, shy little girl. 
 Thanks to Debbie and Bill she became the best she could be which was a sweet, sweet girl. Some of you might remember her as she has been coming to our party for years. LISSR extends their thanks to Debbie and Bill for taking such good care of her and making her life filled with love and happiness.

Luca was a service dog and the love of Barbara’s life. He never had a herding instinct. Luca was calm, and he rarely barked except at vacuums and leaf blowers. Luca lives on in Barbara’s heart.

It’s with a heavy heart that I share the sad news from LISSR: we have lost our dear rescue, Nadia. Below is her foster mom’s touching tribute, which I could not possibly improve upon.

It breaks my heart to inform you that my sweet, precious Nadia passed over the Rainbow Bridge this morning. Though my time with Nadia was brief, our bond was strong, and she will forever hold a place in my heart. Nadia, a very ill Sheltie, was rescued about five months ago. She was facing euthanasia due to her health issues, but LISSR chose to give her a chance at a better life, ensuring her final days were as comfortable as possible.

I began fostering Nadia around 7 weeks ago after her previous foster mom underwent surgery. Our bond formed quickly. The moment she nestled in my arms, I knew we were a perfect match. Her tail wags greeted me upon my return home, and she was always ready for a belly rub. She shadowed me constantly, her gaze never straying. I had hoped for more time together, but fate had other plans. I cherish the moments we shared and am grateful this little soul entered my life. We found each other when we needed it most, fitting together seamlessly, and I will deeply miss her.

Clyde. I recall the day, twelve years ago, when Clyde first arrived at their home, bringing immense excitement. Their sons, then young, have grown into admirable young men. Clyde lived a wonderful life, with a particular fondness for camping and beach outings. Joe fondly considered him his third son. Rest in peace, dear Clyde.

BeauBear was only briefly in his adopted home, yet during that time, he learned the comforts of a warm bed, enjoyed good food, and received all the love he could ever want. BeauBear also made a visit to a nursing home, where he snuggled with the residents and elicited smiles all around. BeauBear, you will be missed by more people than you could ever imagine.

Today, Tina’s fight came to an end, and heaven gained another angel. Despite a challenging beginning, we’re grateful to have provided her with a year and a half filled with love and security. She returned our care tenfold. Anyone who met her would agree she was incredibly sweet. Rest in peace, little one. We appreciate everyone’s prayers and kind thoughts, but some things are not meant to be.

Pepper came into Rescue in 2019 and she lived to be 16 years old under the loving care of Joy and Kitty. It takes special people to adopt a senior and LISSR thanks Joy and Kitty for giving Pepper such a loving home.   RIP sweet girl.

Through so many tears I am writing to tell you all of the loss of one of my best friend. My loyalist friend! She was so dedicated to her family & we loved her like no other. Some of you know she battled health issues but she always remained tough, stoic & a true sheltie. She would’ve been 14yrs old soon & always looked young & beautiful. I told her she can eat as much snow as she wants & bark at as many balls she can. Be pain free my friend & go back to running fast & catching rabbits. I love you Maggie girl.
